Project Amethyst

Project Amethyst was a group project designed to teach us about level design, game mechanics, and collaboration between the team.  This was my first large scale project, I had to design a level that included two core mechanics and also include the use of the GravNull which was the player's gun that could move objects in the game. I designed a battery mechanic that needed to be moved into a slot in order to open doors or move platforms. The  other mechanic was having moving platforms that the player needed to traverse in order to reach the next area. I chose this because it allowed me to create a section of the level that used both mechanics to challenge the player after they have mastered each mechanic in a previous section of the level. The teacher said that my moving platforms were some of the best in terms of how the player stood on and jumped from them. This project gave me huge insight to the importance of proper mechanic introduction in a level design.

  • Created a level that used two core mechanics

  • Created a sections of the level that introduced each mechanic, challenged the player using those mechanics, and combined the two mechanics.

  • Wrote the script for each aspect of the mechanics (Not the player's GravNull).

  • Added collectable items throughout the level

  • Textured all assets used in the level.

  • Connected my section of the level within the group's level.

  • Play tested each of my team member's level

  • After each play test, I gave constructive criticism on ways to improve their level design or mechanics
